Zebegény is a picturesque historic village in Pest County, Hungary. It is 60 km north of Budapest in the Danube Bend, next to the Duna-Ipoly National Park. It is a favorite destination for tourists who love the quiet and the fresh air. Due to its lovely beaches, mountains, and forests, the village was nicknamed "The Marble of the Danube Bend."

The village is built on a hillside, with many houses and lookouts. Even the churchyard offers unparalleled views of the river and Pilis, which rises on the other bank. The village, located 70 kilometers from Budapest, on the western side of the southern Börzsöny, on the banks of the Malom stream, has a population of around 1,200, but this number multiplies during the summer.

It is also easy to reach by train – on one of the most beautiful sections of the Budapest-Szob railway line. The journey there is already an experience. As the train winds along the Danube and Zebegény emerges from the trees, one feels that one has arrived somewhere special. The houses clinging to the hillside, the church tower emerging from the trees, and the silky, shimmering curve of the Danube suggest that one should take time to slow down here. Cyclists also love it, as the EuroVelo6 route along the Danube also passes through it.

It is rich not only in natural beauty but also in its past. According to archaeological findings, this region was inhabited in prehistoric times. It was a flourishing settlement in the Middle Ages but was completely depopulated during the Turkish period. In the 18th century, it was repopulated by Swabian settlers, which is still a defining part of the village’s image today.

At the beginning of the 20th century, artists arrived – including István Szőnyi – who discovered the magic of Zebegény and made a home for themselves here. The former residence of István Szőnyi now functions as a museum. You can still smell the paint in his studio, and time seems to have stood still in the garden.

The Kós Károly church is a sacred space and a work of art. Decorated with folk motifs, the building was built according to Kós Károly's plans. The silence and serenity of the interior will remain in your soul for a long time.

The Calvary, located on the hilltop, is a spiritual place and a fantastic viewpoint. The nearby Trianon monument and the tunnel underneath it are unique attractions. It's worth taking some time here because you can squeeze the experiences of nature, walks along the water, streets that tell stories of history, and a romantic dinner to end the day into one perfect day.

There is also a circular tour from which we can admire the Danube ribbon and the mountains behind it from almost every direction from at least five viewpoints. Therefore, it can rightfully be included among Hungary's most beautiful panoramic tours.
