Established in 1985, the festival commemorates the famous Royal Summit of 1335, when the kings of Hungary, Poland, and Bohemia met in Visegrád to strengthen political and economic ties. Today, the Palace Games honour this shared Central European heritage through authentic historical reenactments and vibrant cultural performances.
Each year, hundreds of performers from the Visegrád Four countries - Hungary, Poland, Slovakia, and the Czech Republic - join participants from Italy, Germany, Romania, Serbia, Slovenia, Austria, and beyond to recreate the atmosphere of a medieval royal gathering.
The festival's centrepiece is the thrilling knightly tournament, where armoured warriors compete on horseback and on foot in spectacular displays of medieval combat on the original tournament grounds of the Royal Palace. The programme also features exciting archery contests, graceful flag-throwing performances, and impressive falconry demonstrations.
Beyond the tournament arena, visitors can wander through the beautifully restored Royal Palace, explore its magnificent Renaissance gardens, and discover how kings and queens once lived within its historic walls.
Throughout the weekend, Visegrád comes alive with the sights, sounds, and flavours of the Middle Ages. Stroll through a bustling medieval marketplace filled with handcrafted treasures and local delicacies, enjoy live music and traditional dance performances, laugh along with street entertainers and puppet shows, or cheer for your favourite knight during dramatic historical duels.
Whether you're passionate about history, travelling with family, or simply looking for a unique summer experience, the International Palace Games of Visegrád offers an unforgettable journey into one of Hungary's most fascinating chapters. Rich in history, colour, and spectacle, it is a festival unlike any other.
