Lake Velence, the third largest lake in Hungary and located only 50 km from Budapest, is extremely popular due to its diverse ecosystem, numerous attractions, and active recreational opportunities. One-third of its surface is covered by reed. Because of the sunshine and its shallow waters, which average 1.5 meters, it is one of the warmest lakes in Europe. The water can reach 26-28 ºC.
The excellent water of Lake Velence, rich in minerals (sodium and magnesium), can refresh and regenerate your exhausted body. Apart from bathing, it is also suitable for relieving rheumatic pains. Thanks to its natural and geographical advantages and the regulation of the lake, it is one of the most frequented holiday resorts in Hungary.
The wilder western part of the lake has been a protected site since 1958. It is a nesting site for several rare bird species, including the great egret, the Eurasian spoonbill, and the great crested grebe, all of which can be observed from the decks of pleasure boats from Agárd harbor. Together, the wildlife, the waving club rushes, and the beautiful fen orchids offer a true feast for the eyes! However, Lake Velence has a wide range of adventures in store for those looking for something other than water-related experiences. Sports fans can complete a bicycle tour around the lake.
Its waters attract large numbers of day-trippers, and not only in the summer but on windy days during spring and autumn, windsurfers and fans of extreme water sports descend, all eager to test their mettle on the rolling waves.
In addition to water sports, cycling around Lake Velence has recently become an almost obligatory summer program. Fortunately, there are several cycling routes here, which lead through diverse landscapes so you can enjoy nature's beauty. If you stay on land, in addition to cycling, the paths along the lake shore lead to stunning landscapes, such as the paths of the Velence Mountains on the northern coast. During your trip, you can also admire the moving stones of Pákozd, famous for their unique rock formations.
Crucian carp and predatory fish can be caught along the reed giant carp. A permit for the region can be bought in fishing equipment shops and tourist information offices.
For those interested in cultural activities, the Halász Palace in Kápolnásnyék is a beautiful building nestled in the center of a romantic one-and-a-half-hectare park.
One of the main advantages of Lake Velence is that it is easy and fast to reach. Traveling from Budapest only takes about 30 minutes, depending on the mode of transport.
