For generations of Budapest residents and visitors, the City Park Ice Rink has been much more than a place to skate. Its historic surroundings, impressive architecture and picturesque setting beside Vajdahunyad Castle have made it a cherished part of the city's winter traditions.

With financial support from wealthier Budapest residents and members of local skating clubs, the rink underwent a significant modernization in 1926. A state-of-the-art refrigeration system was installed, allowing the facility to produce artificial ice and offer more reliable skating conditions.

This development made the City Park Ice Rink the second artificial ice rink in Europe suitable for hosting competitive skating events, placing Budapest at the forefront of the continent’s developing ice sports scene.

The modernization also included the expansion of the historic Skating Pavilion, designed under the direction of architect Ferenc Paulheim Jr. The improvements helped establish the venue as an important centre for recreational skating and organized ice sports.

To celebrate its remarkable history, the City Park Ice Rink is planning a special anniversary programme between November 20 and 22. Rather than simply opening its doors for another winter season, the venue intends to welcome visitors with a festive weekend dedicated to its sporting heritage and cultural significance.

The planned celebrations will feature ice sports demonstrations, live musical performances and a range of exciting programmes for visitors. The anniversary weekend is expected to attract both dedicated skating enthusiasts and those who simply want to enjoy the unique atmosphere of one of Budapest’s most iconic winter locations.

If conditions allow, Budapest’s historic City Park Ice Rink will soon welcome visitors for another winter season - this time with an extra-special reason to celebrate.
